DESCRIPTION:
EPW - H. Golay & Son, Ltd., London, World War II era British military aircraft watch with center-seconds, 62mm, chrome-plated base metal OF original case with rotating black painted bezel with inner markings on a scale of 0 to 360, band with threaded screw at 1 that operates as a clamp to allow or prevent rotation of bezel, case rear with British military broad arrow (pheon) marking in addition to HS.4 designation, white enamel dial, SW-SS, lever escapement with capped escape wheel, likely 18J, Swiss-made gilt mvt, s#285 within case and to dial. The H.S.4 designation is for a Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm dash-mounted timepiece, and during the early portion of World War II, these H. Golay watches were used among Fairey Swordfish biplane torpedo bombers.
CONDITION:
Mvt: Running, fine-plus cosmetic mvt condition overall, train bridge with discolored fingerprint type etching at left perimeter, some mild haze spots scattered elsewhere; dial flawless aside from some surface dirtiness; nearly mint hands; case shows little wear, scattered fine scratches, no dents, good contract marking detail, some areas of paint loss to bezel; crown shows very little wear; plastic crystal with fine to micro-fine scratches, light crazing.
